What We Do
Urban Green Council’s mission is to decarbonize buildings for healthy resilient communities. We do this in four ways: We seek broad stakeholder consensus; we make the technical relatable; we create ambitious and actionable solutions; we educate for results. We’ve been central to NYC policymaking for the last 22 years, including leading work on the creation and implementation of Local Law 97.
Urban Green Council has played an essential role for over 20 years in crafting results-driven workforce and sustainability training for the stakeholders who manage energy use in buildings.
Workforce Development:
Energy Code Training: Urban Green has developed impactful commercial and residential energy code training - including stretch codes - for New York City and NY State. Funded by NYSERDA since 2010, our award-winning courses for designers and other building professionals substantially increased code understanding (NYSERDA Codes Process Evaluation Report, page 9, table 2-5) and improved compliance during the 3-year code cycle by at least 10% (NYSERDA Clean Education Fund, Codes Chapter, May 7, 2021, section 22.1.1.) You can see our current offerings here. Total # professionals trained: 12,000.
GPRO Training: GPRO is a certificate program that teaches the people who build, renovate and operate buildings how to integrate high-performance practices into their everyday work. Working with unions, educational institutions, USGBC chapters, nonprofits, workforce development groups, and construction and real estate firms throughout North America, we’ve trained over 22,000 building professionals to date. Core courses are:
GPRO Operations and Maintenance Essentials training for building operators and facility managers that integrates relevant energy code information
GPRO Construction Management training for contractors, construction managers and other construction personnel that teaches sustainability best practices and actionable strategies for every phase of construction.
Events and Conferences:
Urban Green offers a variety of high-quality public programs that reach the entirety of the real estate, construction, and sustainability industries. Formats include:
